Biophysics (also biological physics) is an interdisciplinary branch of physics, which studies the physical aspects of biology. Its area of interest sometimes overlap with those of physiology, biochemistry or molecular biology.

The connection between physics and biology is two-way. On one side, biology provides physics with biological systems having interesting physical properties. On the other, physics provides tools to solve problems in biology.

Areas of biophysics include

  • bioenergetics
  • cell biophysics
  • channels, receptors and transporters
  • electrophysiology
  • membranes
  • muscle and contractility
  • nucleic acids
  • photobiophysics
  • proteins
  • supramolecular assemblies
  • spectroscopy, imaging etc.
